Katniss Everdeen is really a survivor. She has to be; she's representing her District, number 12, inside the 74th Hunger Games inside Capitol, the center of Panem, a fresh land that rose from your ruins of your post-apocalyptic North America. To punish citizens on an early rebellion, the rulers require each district to offer one girl then one boy, 24 in all, to battle like gladiators inside a futuristic arena. The event is broadcast like reality TV, and the winner returns with wealth for his / her district. With clear inspiration from Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" along with the Greek tale of Theseus, Collins has created a brilliantly imagined dystopia, where the Capitol is rich and the rest of the country is held in abject poverty, the location where the poor battle on the death for that amusement in the rich. Impressive world-building, breathtaking action and clear philosophical concerns get this to volume, a symptom of a planned trilogy, as effective as The Giver and much more exciting. However, poor copyediting in the first printing will distract careful readers - a crying shame. (Science fiction. 11 & up) (Kirkus Reviews) --New

Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen regards it being a death sentence when she is forced to represent her district within the annual Hunger Games, a fight on the death on live TV. But Katniss has been clse to death before-and survival, for her, is second nature. The Hunger Games is often a searing novel set in a future with unsettling parallels to your present. Welcome to the deadliest reality TV show ever...
